A letter to nurses and nurse anesthesia students from the Chief Executive Officer of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing on leadership opportunities and membership into STTI.
Sigma Membership and You
As Dr. Gould has explained in this newsletter, being a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) may benefit you when you are applying to CRNA programs. Sigma was founded in 1922 by six student nurses from Indiana University. Since that time, Sigma now has more than 130,000 members from more than 100 countries. Unlike other collegiate honor societies, Sigma programs and services accompany you throughout your career. We offer membership benefits that include free continuing nursing education (currently more than 130 contact hours), free subscriptions to two top ten journals (Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Worldviews on Evidence Based Nursing), a mentoring program, and discounts for our events. We also offer leadership academies for nurses in practice as well as academic settings. You can learn more at: www.sigmanursing.org
Now that you are interested in membership, how can you join? If you are currently in a school that has a Sigma chapter, talk to the chapter leadership about their time frames for invitation and induction. Requirements for student membership differ between undergraduate and graduate students. More information is here: https://www.sigmanursing.org/why-sigma/sigma-membership/apply-now/student-membership-criteria
What if you missed the opportunity to join as a student and are no longer a student? You may be eligible to join as a nurse leader. For Sigma, leadership happens wherever you are as a nurse. Thus, if you have demonstrated achievement in nursing scholarship, leadership or service/practice, you may be eligible. Examples of activities within each category can be found here: https://www.sigmanursing.org/docs/default-source/Members/achievementinnursing.pdf?sfvrsn=e29f2ff2_4
To submit a nurse leader application, go to this page and click “I am a nurse leader”, https://application.stti.org/#/
Or contact us via email at memserv@sigmanursing.org
Students from under-represented groups are often not aware of or informed of organizations like Sigma. Our goal is to foster nursing leadership and scholarship in support of transforming global health. We need nurse leaders like you!
