The power of one year.
May 2023 to August 2024

You are absolutely worthy of your aspirations. People can (and will) tell you that your ambitions aren't achievable, but you can NEVER let someone break your spirit. Surround yourself with people who will remind you of that. No one in my family has ever made it over the hurdles, but what they instilled in me has turned those hurdles into speed bumps in my eyes. They are annoying but not impossible.

Q&A with CRNA OF THE WEEK: Darryl Tolbert, DNP, CRNA by OSANA

1. How long have you been a CRNA?
I have been a CRNA for 3.5 years. I graduated from Texas Christian University in December 2020.

2. Where do you work?
I work at Kettering Health Dayton and Soin Medical Center.

3. What made you want to become a CRNA?
My undergraduate nursing program preached the importance of going back to school and continuing my nursing education. While doing research on the profession, I attended a Diversity CRNA conference and was blown away. I learned so much about being a CRNA during this conference. It was very motivational and inspiring. Attending this conference was what propelled me to pursue anesthesia school.

4. What is your favorite case to do in anesthesia and why?
My favorite cases are Orthopedic cases. You can administer various anesthetics techniques like regional, general, and neuraxial. I like the flow of these cases. They are not too long nor too short. Most importantly, they play good music in ortho rooms.

5. What diverse characteristics shaped your education/training? How have they contributed to your practice as a CRNA?
Growing up in Detroit has made me the person that I am today. Growing up in Detroit you always have a chip on your shoulder. It’s a certain confidence and swag you get from being from there. It’s a gritty place and you have to be tough to survive. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. Sometimes things don’t go your way or life is very challenging. Us Detroiters don’t let that stop us; we just make it happen. It’s ingrained in me that there is no mountain high enough because I know I can pull through. This mindset gave me the ability to persevere through any situation in life, i.e. anesthesia school.

6. Who are some of your mentors?
My parents are great mentors for me. My mother is a woman of faith and she introduced me to religion at a very young age. In some of my lowest points in life, it was my faith that got me through. My dad is the man I always looked up to growing up. He was always there for me throughout my life. He’s had a major influence on my life.

Dr. Lena Gould who is the president of Diversity CRNA, is someone who sparked the fire in me to accomplish my dreams. Through her platform I was able to network with other like-minded individuals to help me throughout my anesthesia journey.

7. What is your hobby outside of anesthesia?
Hanging with my family and friends, grilling, watching sports, playing video games, target shooting, and lawn care.

8. Your advice to others?
Do It! Whatever it is you want in life, go get it. Stop making excuses and make history. People will not believe in you; they will doubt you. You have to believe in yourself. There are no short cuts to the top…it's all hustle, no luck.

And, just like that, Kim Boit, starting new journey in one of the most diverse Nurse Anesthesia cohorts in the country at Rosalind Franklin University of Science & Medicine.

As per Kim, Here’s to the next 3 years of challenges, learning opportunities, and becoming the best anesthesia provider I can be.

I am extremely fortunate to embark on this journey with an exceptional and DIVERSE group of nurses!

A crna•ish story publicly witnessing a transformative professional career moment of change in Nurse Anesthesia journey

In 2023, Trevon Smith attended a Diversity CRNA Event as an ICU RN surrounded by CRNA mentors.

In 2024, Trevon started in cohort as a nurse anesthesia student at La Roche University!

As per Trevon: “I am very happy to announce my acceptance into a program to receive my Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Upon completion, I would officially be a CRNA!

I was the kid who initially did terrible in undergrad. The kid who became a father and dropped out in his junior year of college and was told he’d never go back. I proved the naysayers wrong, but more importantly I proved to myself and my son that we can accomplish anything.
