The best part about being immersed with the early professional socialization process pursuing Nurse Anesthesia is the friendships that are launched across the country.
All of them attended a Diversity CRNA Event as a critical care nurse before applying to nurse anesthesia programs.
They rejoined as nurse anesthesia students as panelists & preceptors at the Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh.
The nurse anesthesia programs represented from these graduate student panelists are the University of Pittsburgh, Virginia Commonwealth University, La Roche University, Emory University, University of Buffalo, Mary Baldwin University & Case Western Reserve University!
Imagine being supported and seen in Nurse Anesthesia journey
In 2023, Alan Garcia, critical care nurse attended a Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh. Last weekend, he served on graduate student panel at the Diversity CRNA Event at the University of Pittsburgh speaking on Emory University acceptance!
As per Alan, I cannot tell you what it means to be part of an organization like Diversity CRNA. Last week, I was awarded a full-time ride scholarship to attend Emory University CRNA school through the Air Force.
I do not know what I've done to keep being blessed, but I do know that I got to pay it forward!

Another clinical rotation complete.. Alhamdulillah!
After completing 3 rotations so far, it’s eye opening to see the different levels of autonomy CRNAs have depending on the culture of the practice.
This was the first site where I was left alone in the room 90% of the time.
First site where I performed anesthesia for Trauma patients (gunshots, stabbings, motor vehicle accidents)
First site where I was on overnight call shifts and went to the floor for emergent intubations.
Lots of firsts, but I’m still a baby in the world of
hashtag#anesthesia ; glad that I’m able to finally start walking on my own a little bit.
Though I battle with the chronic fatigue that comes with school, I’m Incredibly humble and grateful for all the opportunities and preceptors that go out of their way to educate me in ways that help improve my practice.

In 2024, bearing fruit in a magnificent way! Congratulations on your acceptance into a Nurse Anesthesia Program!
Seeing the excellent space you provided for ICU nurses of color made my dreams feel so real, and that put a fire under me to fight to become a black anesthesia provider one day.
Last summer, I attended the RFU Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia info session, one of my life’s best experiences. I was HEAVILY impacted by every single person I crossed paths with! I connected with Dr. April Morris CRNA at this event, and just months later, she helped me with a mock interview session that I truly believed was why I got into my program. Her guidance and feedback were phenomenal.
"Dr. Gould, I am so thankful for that fantastic opportunity because it changed my life’s trajectory in such a positive way. I will always give you your flowers because you 1000% deserve them. The mentorship you have created has been pivotal for many of us and the profession is better for it!"

James 1:12 - “Blessed is the man under trial, for when he stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.”
This past March I was selected for candidacy to obtain my Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree in Nurse Anesthesiology. This will actually be my fourth degree. Although I’ve been sitting on this news for a while now, the feeling is still surreal. I faced so many obstacles and sacrificed so much for this path. I took every negative to the chin, stayed focused on the mission, and kept grinding.
I’m thankful for the Lord’s faithfulness, even on the days I didn’t deserve it. I truly believe I wouldn’t have gotten this far if it wasn’t for His grace. I’m thankful for my family for always supporting me on both my best days and on my worst. I’m also thankful for all the friends and mentors I’ve met along the way that were willing to lend me a hand without wanting anything in return, but my success.
Only 3% of CRNAs are black, so needless to say getting to this point wasn’t easy. It’s an honor and privilege to be on this journey. With that being said, there is still a long road ahead of me. The journey of 1000 miles begins with 1 step. The job is far from finished, but if you’ve been in tune with my journey, you already know I’m no stranger to the grind.
Dr. Nsikan Mbatt DNP, CRNA loading… my last name finna get even stronger than my muscles!
