Captain Dr. James Winters, DNP, CRNA, NSPM-C is a Board Member for the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program and proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Incorporated.


Captain Dr. Winters is an active-duty officer as a Captain of the United States Air Force Reserve. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program. Dr. Winter’s DNP capstone project was titled, The Use of Culturally Sensitive Education to Influence Attitudes of Ethnic Minorities in Southern Mississippi Towards Organ Donation.


Captain Dr. Winters has completed an Advanced Pain Management Fellowship Program at Texas Christian University. He is one of five Black male CRNAs with a Non-Surgical Pain Management Certification (NSPM-C) and he owns an independent practice.


Captain Dr. Winters has lent his expertise to Diversity CRNA for many years. Thank you for your service.

Captain Dr. Daryl de Lima DNP, CRNA began as an Active Duty Army Nurse in Hawaii. He has served overseas in South Korea, Afghanistan & other locations.

Honor & Glory on Veterans Day to Dr. Carlos Xavier Moreno, DrAP, CRNA, NSPM-C, Advanced Pain Management Fellow & Owner of Xact Anesthesia, which holds a patent for determining the depth at which a line or catheter inserted.

Dr. Carlos Xavier Moreno is double board-certified in Anesthesia and Non-Surgical Pain Management (NSPM-C). He began his healthcare career in 1993 after enlisting in the US Military, where he developed a passion for leadership, evidence-based medicine, and a thirst for knowledge, all of which he credits to his military service. His commitment to excellence earned him leadership awards and multiple meritorious promotions.



Dr. Moreno pursued degrees in Education and Nursing, along with certifications in critical care nursing, including CCRN and Cardiac Medicine. He later earned his Nurse Anesthesia certification from Rosalind Franklin University, where he served as Class President and received the Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Nurse Anesthesia Student. Recognized as an expert in Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia, he conducted research on peripheral nerve blocks. Dr. Moreno earned a Doctor of Anesthesia Practice (DrAP) from the University of Michigan-Flint and completed an Interventional Pain externship with Premiere Pain Management. He completed his second advanced pain fellowship at the University of South Florida in 2022.

Honor & Glory on Veterans Day to COL Karen Smith, DNAP, CRNA.


Dr. Karen Smith is a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, where she currently serves as the Assistant Deputy Commander of Nursing Services for the 7456th Medical Operations Readiness Unit in Des Moines, IA. She brings over three decades of distinguished military service to the conference stage.


In addition to her dedicated military service, Dr. Smith has a fervent commitment to humanitarian missions, providing medical aid to underserved communities around the globe. Her combined military and humanitarian multinational tours have led her to well over 500,000 flight miles, simultaneously cultivating her love for travel and international cuisine.


COL Karen Smith, DNAP, CRNA provided the keynote address at the Diversity CRNA Information Session at the University of Pittsburgh this year titled The CRNA Green Book - All Roads Are Not Created Equal.
