Bravo to Dr. Keturah Williams, DNP, CRNA, an alumna of the Duke University Nurse Anesthesia Program, for passing the National Certification Exam to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

Dr. Williams’ success is a reflection of her perseverance and the strong foundation built through the rigorous training at Duke’s Nurse Anesthesia Program.

Dr. Williams also completed a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholarly project titled High Fidelity in Situ Simulation for Enhancing Malignant Hyperthermia Crisis Management, which focused on improving patient safety through simulation-based education.

As a new CRNA, Dr. Williams is poised to make significant contributions to the field of anesthesia, using her expertise to improve patient care and mentoring future generations of anesthesia professionals.

Guided by her personal motto adopted from Beyonce's song lyrics, "I dream it, I work hard, I grind ‘til I own it," Dr. Williams’ dedication to excellence and her contributions to the field are inspiring as she embarks on her career as a CRNA.

And, just like that, Monica Lebron, Franciscan Missionaries Our Lady University Nurse Anesthesia Program completed didactic, clinical & DNP scholarly project requirements!

Next up, graduation and CRNA boards!

Monica and her husband, Cordero served on the Diversity CRNA Student Panel at the RFU 2024 event.

Black Butterfly
Silken dream take flight
As the darkness gives way to the dawn
You've survived
Now your moment has arrived
Now your dream has finally been born

In Nurse Anesthesia News of Excellence from a Southern University School of Nursing Alum & Proud Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

Periodically, it is beneficial to take some time away in solitude to reflect, refocus, reset, re-shift, and to seek and follow God’s guidance. I decided to pursue a 120-day fast. These intimate moments presented opportunities for clarity, growth and self-development.

I have always had a passion for academia - specifically diversity, equally and inclusion (DEI) among nursing student and faculty demographic representations. It has been a blessing to sow back into my dear profession and to pursue challenges to continually grow professionally and educationally.

Graduation ceremony for my Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) from LSU Shreveport was in September. I earned the Nurse Executive Advanced (NEA-BC) and Academic Nurse Educator (CNE) board certification credentials recently. Moral of my story - God still has His hands on me.

Gratefully,

Dr. Fred Reed, III, DNP, MBA, CRNA, NEA-BC, CNE

Aaron Anderson participated as a senior nursing student at the Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh in 2015.

Sueanny Lopez attended a Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at the University of Miami in 2019.

They are both products of the Immersion Model for Diversifying Nurse Anesthesia Programs.

An Open Letter to Andrea…

We met at the DNPs of Color Conference in Philadelphia and you touched my heart so much, I had to respond. Listen, your dream to become a CRNA can be realized just like a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh Nurse Anesthesia Program, Brett Fadgen, CRNA, MSN.

An excerpt from a written AANA article about Brett who was born without the lower portion of his right arm…but, he too, had a dream to become a CRNA.

In his effort to pursue it, the American with Disabilities Act, Office of Accommodation and a committed progressive Nurse Anesthesia Program Director, Dr. John O’Donnell, DrPH, CRNA, CHSE-E, FAANA, FAAN, FSSH, made his dream realized.

Fadgen, a nurse anesthetist at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) believes as far as he knows, he is the only Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in the country with one arm.

“I do have a disability, but I’m not disabled,” he said. “I may not do a task the same way as others. I can do it just as fast, but I do it differently.”

Fadgen uses several adaptive devices, including a second prosthetic hand specifically for intubating. He engineered that prosthetic by having it manufactured as short as it possibly could be, which improved dexterity.

In conjunction with his program director, John O’Donnell, Fadgen declared his disability to the school’s Office of Disability Resources and Services, where he learned about opportunities and accommodations provided to him and the school under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“The ADA supports reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities as long as their accommodations are in fact reasonable to the educational institutions and/or employer. In my case, I was permitted to proceed in the program and I was able to be successful by practicing through simulation labs using my prosthetic devices,” he said.

Black butterfly, sailed across the waters
Tell your sons and daughters
What the struggle brings
Black Butterfly, set the skies on fire
Rise up even higher
So the ageless winds of time can catch your wings
Fly Butterfly
Yeah, yeah, yes Fly
