Dear Dr. Gould,
My name is Darryl Loman II and I'm a MSN, RN located in Pittsburgh, PA. I just want to say thank you for having the Diversity CRNA Information Session at PITT.
It was extremely encouraging and uplifting and I feel supported as I embark on this journey to become a CRNA. I attended the same event two years ago
as a nursing student and now I'm a nurse that will definitely plan to apply to the University of Pittsburgh during the next application cycle.
One photo is from two years ago when I was a nursing student.
Thank you again!

Dear First Generation Nurses interested in Nurse Anesthesia, repeat after me...
I will be a CRNA
I will be a PhD CRNA Researcher
I will be a Pain Management Fellow
I will be a Nurse Anesthesia Professor
I will be a Simulation Educator (CHSE)
I will be a CRNA FAAN FAANA

This is an evidence-based initiative for RNs of color of the Immersion Model for Diversifying Nurse Anesthesia Programs.

All of our Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop Events start with a Friday Meet & Greet!
In order to break the ice with ICU nurses from across the country interested in Nurse Anesthesia, we played a cup game starting with 12 nurses and ending with 2 winning anesthesia books! Dr. Everett Moss posing with the two winners of the cup challenge game!
The book...each ICU RN won!
Notably, Only 2 Black CRNAs as Chapter Authors in widely used textbook nationally, Nurse Anesthesia 7th edition by Nagelhout, Elisha & Heiner.
Dr. Wallena Gould, EdD, CRNA, FAANA, FAAN: Chapter 3
Dr. Vincent Ford, DNAP, CRNA: Chapter 19
Chapter 3: Nurse Anesthesia on Patient Centered Care, Cultural Competence and Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Structural racism in healthcare, COVID19 impact, Black Maternal Mortality and anesthetic considerations
Chapter 19: Clinical Monitoring III: Neurological System
Last Saturday...
Presenter Dr. Everett Moss, DNP, CRNA at the Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Moss presented to critical care nurses of color interested in Nurse Anesthesia on DNP/DNAP Project Ideas through a diversity and health equity lens.
Now, these critical care nurses can write about their immersive Diversity CRNA weekend event in personal statement for CRNA admission consideration. And start thinking about DNP/DNAP Capstone Projects and timeline through an equity lens.

And, for the win, this teenage mother at 16 navigated through adversity from nursing assistant, Associate Degree in Nursing then BSN to delivering anesthesia to patients in community
This past weekend, Dr. April Morris DNAP, CRNA presented about her trajectory and balancing family and finances at the Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh!
She was a RN for 5 years and earned BSN/CCRN. As a critical care nurse, she attended a Diversity CRNA 2017 Event! As a teenage mom, we both are from the same cloth.
As per April: “God had me all the time”...
Dr. Morris is at the core of the Immersion Model for Diversifying Nurse Anesthesia Programs.

This past weekend, we are hosted our Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at the University of Pittsburgh! This will be our 63rd event!!
Levia Sutton, CRNA, MSN, PhD Student presenting on optimizing personal statement for nurse anesthesia admission consideration.
Presently, Levia serves as the Chair for the Diversity CRNA Personal Statement & Résumé Review Committee for diverse nurses interested in Nurse Anesthesia.
This is a free service, the way it should be, of course. Why free? We remember those CRNAs who poured themselves in us in our own personal journey.
Never forget and we hope you do the same too. Pay it forward!

This past weekend...Dr. Martina R. Cruz Steed, PhD, CRNA, NSPM-C, CHSE, FAANA Professor & Chair, Department of Advanced Clinical Sciences Webster University and Board member, presented on Interventional & Chronic Pain Management at the Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Steed is the only Hispanic CRNA Educator as a Full Professor, one of six Hispanic PhD CRNA Educators, one of four Hispanic Simulation Educators (CHSE) and one of six Hispanic CRNAs as a Fellow of Advanced Pain Management (NSPM-C).
It's time for historically excluded ICU RNs of color interested in Nurse Anesthesia to be exposed to the number of inspirational possibilities including PhD researchers and advanced pain management by CRNAs who mirror them in hue, culture and ambition.

In 2024, Diversity has scheduled five in-person events. Registration is closed for the first four events, as they are all filled to capacity with extensive waitlists.
The first two successful events at Midwestern University and the University of Pittsburgh have been completed. To accommodate waitlisted individuals, Diversity CRNA offered a Zoom broadcast of the Saturday Information Session, allowing more people to participate. This session provides the opportunity to hear from four program directors about what they seek in potential candidates. Additionally, diverse CRNAs offer informative presentations, a mock interview, and an SRNA panel.
The next event, at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science, is also filled to capacity. If you were unable to register for the in-person event, consider registering for the Zoom broadcast when available.
If you are interested in attending in person, there are still a few seats left in the last event at Fairfield University.

Meet the Nurse Anesthesia Student Moderator, Rebecca Duncan for this weekend’s Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh.
I am the evidence from Dr. Gould’s recent Nursing Outlook publication and will have the honor of moderating for the weekend event!
Just last year, I was an attendee anxiously awaiting my admission decision.
This publication is the original contributory work of Dr. Wallena Gould, EdD, CRNA, FAANA, FAAN, & Dr. Jiale Gary Hu, PhD, RN, FAAN (VCU, Director of Research and Global Outreach)
The study aimed to evaluate a national mentorship program supporting underrepresented nurses’ applications for nurse anesthesia education programs with 1,133 participants.
Surround yourself with CRNAs who support your goals!
Today, Danielle Parker is a Nurse Anesthesia Student Mary Baldwin University.
In 2022, as a critical care nurse, Danielle attended a Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is learning to intubate with Dr. Jamare Reed, DNP, CRNA.
This past weekend, Danielle served on the nurse anesthesia student panel at the Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at the University of Pittsburgh.
Danielle shared her journey and served as an airway simulation lab preceptor at the weekend event. Full circle.
