Huge honor to speak about my journey as a leader in diversifying the nurse anesthesia profession. It was an incredible event!

I was overwhelmed of the importance of the prestigious award by the President of Villanova University. Then, to be introduced by the Dean of the College of Nursing! CRNA was the first in the Philadelphia region to be selected as seen as a transformational leader in nurse anesthesia.

I loved sharing the historical context of Goldie Brangman, CRNA as the Program Director of Harlem School of Anesthesia and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1958. Thank you for seeing the contributory national grassroots evidenced-based work by this Fellow into three Academies. Villanova University acknowledges nurse anesthesia exemplary giants moving mountains and holding ladders for so many others across the country can climb.

Dr. Jones, a Black Nurse Anesthetist and Dayton native addressed issues on the importance of colonoscopy screenings, breast mammograms and awareness of Black maternal mortality and anesthesia considerations.

Also, in the article, Dr. Jones discusses his own change in career trajectory from Respiratory Technician to critical care nurse and recent graduate of the University of Cincinnati Doctor in Nurse Anesthesia Practice Nurse Anesthesia Program.

In Nurse Anesthesia Faculty News…

Congratulations to Dr. Maiko Yamashita, DNP, CRNA (Program Director, Rush University Nurse Anesthesia Program, a fierce advocate in admission equity and Board Member, Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program) supporting her nurse anesthesia residents in advancing linguistic literacy.

As per Dr. Yamashita:

I had the pleasure of presenting “Bridging Gaps, Building Health: Advancing Equity Through Linguistic Literacy in Healthcare” at the ISAPN Midwest Conference with Kimberly Zielinski (‘25 cohort) and Sergio Cruz Gutierrez (‘25 cohort).

It was just yesterday that I was interviewing them. Now they’ve got 10 months to go (who’s counting) and they’re off into their own CRNA careers. This is one of the best parts of being a Program Director… opening eyes to all of the potential within ourselves and making an impact in the communities that we serve.

I had an amazing time at the DNPs of Color Conference at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia.

Topic: We Belong Here: Disability and Advocacy Nursing

For us, by us!

For 10 years, Black CRNAs have committed to increasing pathway initiatives by visibly making ourselves known to Black nursing students at Diversity CRNA HBCU School of Nursing Tours 2014 - 2024.

We hand each student photo collages of Black CRNAs standing in front of the anesthesia machine.

Our next Diversity CRNA 2025 HBCU Tour will be announced in a few weeks, a closed event to nursing students of the selected campus.

All of this is intentional, of course.

CRNAs that are members of the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program interested in giving back can volunteer at these events. Interested in volunteering in 2025, please email us at diversitycrna4u@gmail.com.

Out of the blue…

Enjoying this incredible moment when a CRNA whom you mentored before he enrolled in Villanova University Nurse Anesthesia Program 15 years ago...sent me this text.

"Today, we stand on the shoulders of those who sacrificed and paved the way".

Priceless. ((HUGS))
