KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Thank you for speaking to marginalized ICU nurse about planting PhD research opportunity seeds
Keynote Speaker, Diversity CRNA 2024 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at Duke University.
Dr. Edwin Aroke, PhD, CRNA, FADLN, FAANA, FAAN (PhD Program Director, Tenured Professor & NIH Pain Disparities Researcher at the University of Alabama Birmingham)
"Research is formalized curiosity." ~Zora Neal Hurston
In October, we will repeat this at Fairfield University.
We address the staggering low representation of racially diverse CRNA workforce through the award winning Immersion Model for Diversifying Nurse Anesthesia Programs.
As per Dr. Aroke:
“In 2010, I had the honor of serving as the Nurse Anesthesia Student moderator for the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program Information Session at Duke University. Fast forward to today, I returned to the same event at Duke University, but this time as the keynote speaker.
t’s incredible to see how far I’ve come and to be able to give back to a program that means so much to me. Thank you, Dr. Lena Gould Here’s to growth, perseverance, and the power of mentorship."
Who would have thought this could ever happen?
But, it did
Captain Dr. James Winters, DNP, CRNA standing with critical care nurses immediately after the Diversity CRNA Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop Event hosted at Virginia Commonwealth University
The most remarkable organic encounter were these 6 nurses who never met each other before this weekend event.
“It was refreshing to attend the Diversity CRNA event and not only see people that resemble me but also meet people from the same place as me- the motherland Eritrea.”
The audacity to walk in their own path...together.
“I have the nerve to walk my own way, however hard, in my search for reality, rather than climb upon the rattling wagon of wishful illusions.” ~ Zora Neale Hurston ~
The Power of Ten….
Two hundred twelve critical care nurses across the country attended a Diversity CRNA 2022 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop at Virginia Commonwealth University before applying to CRNA Programs.
Subsequently, ten critical care nurses of color in this image, interviewed and accepted into the University of Cincinnati Nurse Anesthesia Program.
In attendance at this weekend immersive event, 4 nurse anesthesia program directors from Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University, Mary Baldwin University and the University of Cincinnati.
The power of 10 historically excluded nurses of color matriculating & graduating in same nurse anesthesia cohort from the University of Cincinnati, priceless.
Diversity CRNA 2023 Information Session & Airway Simulation Lab Workshop hosted at Samuel Merritt University
Nurse Anesthesia Student Panelists:
Iman Mattox (SMU)
Matthew Crisostomo (SMU)
Lawrence Cheung (National University)
Jewell Morris (University of Southern California
Tara Pettus (SMU)
All five offered their perspective on balancing family, finances, well-being and nurse anesthesia clinical/didactic journey to historically excluded nurses of color interested in same trajectory.
The best part...all 5 were RNs at same Diversity CRNA before applying to school, 4 are now CRNAs!

A Robert Wood Johnson historical first for a CRNA!
Congratulations to Levia A. Sutton, CRNA, MSN, PhD Student (University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing) selected as a Health Policy Research Scholar (HPRS) - Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)!
PhD research interest: Examining Social Determinants of Health, specifically exploring how widespread community violence and trauma exposure affects the well-being of individuals living in marginalized communities, particularly in the health of Black women.
As per RWJF's Announcement:
We are proud to announce that Levia A. Sutton, MSN, CRNA, PhD Student at Penn Nursing, has been selected to participate in one of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s leadership programs. These programs connect changemakers across the country—from diverse professions and fields—to learn from and work with one another in creating more just and thriving communities.
Specifically, Levia was selected for Health Policy Research Scholars. Designed for doctoral students from historically marginalized backgrounds and populations underrepresented in specific disciplines, Health Policy Research Scholars helps students from all fields apply their work to policies that advance equity and health while building a diverse network of leaders who reflect our changing national demographics.
As a member of the program’s newest cohort, Levia focuses on the structural determinants of health, investigating the impact of exposure to community violence on the well-being of individuals in marginalized communities, with a particular interest in the health of Black women.
